Yearly in the months of March, April, May and June whale sharks are observed at the Gladden Spit Area by divers and snorkelers. The whale shark experts recommend the most opportune time to see them en masse is three days before and after the full moon. Unfortunately, since whale sharks are night feeders, there really are no guarantees as to when they show up. In the end it is all about luck, timing and the moon.

The whale shark is the largest fish in the world, and one of the largest creature of any kind alive today. However, despite its their size, whale sharks are remarkably gentle and curious and does not pose
any significant danger to humans. The whale sharkâs gentle natures makes swimming with them a special treat. Sometimes whale sharks seem to be asking to be petted as they glide alongside fishing boats. Divers and snorkelers can swim with this giant fish without any risk.
The whale sharks roam up and down the coast, but the Gladden Spit area about 26 miles off the coast of Placencia is known to host large concentrations of whale sharks during April and May when primarily large schools of Mutton and Dog Snappers are spawning. The whales ingest the spawn as food. Even if no whale sharks are spotted, divers will have quality encounters with the large schools of fish that are spawning.
